civil liberties v. national security

rant about work related stuff (but it’s important and pretty interesting!!) it’s become a huge issue, and this article was sent in to my work inbox today.. this is really sensitive stuff, and ultimately, i’m not even sure which one i’d choose to protect. in new york and around the area, Muslim students are being monitored by the NYPD. authorities are conducting intelligence investigations (without informing the subjects of the investigation) for potential terrorist links. a girl forwarded an email about a Muslim conference to her colleagues and was subsequently placed on a list and monitored. freedom of speech? freedom of assembly? freedom to worship? religious tolerance? the first amendment grants us certain liberties, but we all know the government interprets this differently under isolated circumstances. the question is, it it acceptable to compromise them in times of crisis, or for preventative efforts that show no evidence of producing substantive results? i get it, national security is on top of the agenda with all the money that we’ve blasted into this war on terror. our tax dollars are at work, and the govt needs to produce some findings or make it look like progress is on it’s way, or else they look incompetent. that’s why they made such a big deal about bin laden, sadam, etccccc. but there’s a fine line between what’s granted to us and what leaders do to protect and serve…at what point, if ever, is it ok to infringe on these liberties? would you be alright with someone taking away your voice or your freedom to look out for collective interests?
